DescriptionPosition Description
Skilled Craft – Operate heavy equipment and light equipment to execute maintenance and repair work for all county roads and bridges.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment to construct, repair, and maintain roads, including snow removal operations. Perform routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance, maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, fuel usage, and operating hours, and assist with general public works duties such as grounds and building maintenance, brushing, sign installation and repair, crack sealing, culvert maintenance and replacement, and storm cleanup
Qualifications and Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Commercial driver's license
- Class B required upon hire;
Class A with tanker endorsement and air brakes required within guidelines set by Highway Engineer. - 3 years' work experience in the operation of heavy equipment (i.e. motor grader, dozer, loader, backhoe, tandem/single axle trucks, tractor/mower, etc.)
OR graduate from a 2-year vocational-technical school in Heavy Equipment Operation.
- Successfully pass a pre-placement screen, contingent upon a job offer.
- Successfully pass a pre-placement controlled substance test (under the Federal Drug and Alcohol Testing law), and completion of Release of Information 49 CFR Part 40 (40.25, as amended) 382.301, contingent upon a job offer.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Operation of heavy and light diesel and gas powered construction and maintenance equipment. Road construction and maintenance needs. Safe operations. Computer operations. Adhere to all laws, statutes, policies and rules with the essential level of confidentiality and safety required of the position.
Skills: Proficient in using automated systems relevant to the position. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all stakeholders relevant to the position. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, accuracy, and problem solving.
Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Follow established procedures and directives from supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License
- Class A with tanker endorsement and air brakes. - Work experience with snow removal and ice control operations in a road system or commercial environment.
- Work experience, beyond the minimum, operating various heavy equipment (rubber tire loader, track-type excavator, track-type dozer, motor grader, skid-steer/compact track loader).
- Completed OSHA-compliant chainsaw safety training within the past 3 years.
- Current first aid and/or CPR/AED certification
