The City of Bloomington is seeking a Part‑time Maintenance Worker Intern to learn to and perform mechanical work in the complete repair, maintenance, and overhaul of automotive equipment, trucks, and other light and heavy equipment. Qualified applicants must be enrolled in a Diesel, Equipment, or Automotive program at a Vocational school.

The work week will consist of attending school and performing mechanical work, as class allows, on the City’s fleet.

Our shop hours are 9:30 AM through 5:30 PM. We are flexible with scheduling work hours. The Intern will be paid for all hours worked at the city.

NOTE:

City of Bloomington supplies all the tools and equipment needed for the job.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, trucks, tractors, sweepers, and other light and heavy equipment
  • Conduct work functions in a safe and respectful manner, use proper Personal Protective Equipment at all times, adhere to all workplace safety standards
  • Document and record all repairs, parts, labor costs, vehicle number, or other required information related to daily operations for fleet information systems including initiating communication with supervisor to discuss improvements in work procedures
  • Assist in maintaining effective repair parts, oils, and fuel inventories including inventories and restocking shelves
  • Demonstrate positive and professional attitude toward job assignments and tasks to be performed
  • Demonstrate personal initiative and effective use of City resources to provide excellent service to the public
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned
  • Work different shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES THAT WILL BE AQUIRED
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Demonstrates skill in operating diagnostic and test equipment to determine the nature of equipment malfunction
  • Demonstrates ability to operate various types of light and heavy equipment
  • Proactively identifies problems and makes recommendations for solutions
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of safe working conditions
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with other departments and divisions
  • Demonstrates ability to develop ideas, and, when authorized, to implement change
  • Demonstrates comprehension of new and emerging technologies and applies this knowledge to repair procedures
  • Skill in the use of electric tools, pneumatic tools, basic hand tools, and computerized testing equipment
  • Skill in the use of soldering, welding, and torching equipment including being able to select the correct thickness and types of materials
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be enrolled as a student of a Diesel, Equipment, or Automotive program at a vocational school
  • Valid driver’s license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in doing maintenance and repairs on small engines, automobiles, and or equipment
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Experience in welding and fabrication
  • Additional work experience in the repair field
