Position: Permanent Substitute Teacher

2026-27 School Year

Performs regular teacher's class plan while the teacher is absent.

The job of Permanent Substitute Teacher reports to the Substitute Staff Services Specialist.

This is a full-time position. You will be assigned to an elementary school Monday-Thursday and float to other buildings on Fridays as assigned.

Must be flexible to work at different buildings and grade levels. The majority of assignments will be at elementary level.

Must be committed to working every day that students are in session.

Must be willing to accept substitute paraprofessional/teacher aide assignments as well as special class assignments, i.e., Art, Music, PE, SPED, etc.

Permanent Substitute Teacher Pay is: $148 per day; benefits eligible.

Essential Functions
  • Assumes the responsibilities for instructing classes when a teacher is absent.
  • Assumes all other responsibilities for that teacher during the time the teacher is absent.
  • Prepares lesson plans with assistance, as directed by an administrator, when lesson plans are not available in the classroom.
  • Maintains appropriate records including checking test papers, recording grades, student assignments for homework, projects and the necessary clerical work required to maintain student records for a teacher who is absent.
  • Provides individualized and small group assistance for students as indicated by lesson plans.

  • Supervises students.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on program and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents, skill in oral and written communication.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee must occasionally push and/or move up to fifty pounds such as a TV/VCR cart. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Experience:

Job-related experience is desired.

Education:

Associate degree or bachelor's degree (preferred) or a minimum of 36 college credit hours. Current Missouri Teaching Certificate or current Missouri Substitute Teacher Certificate required.
