Incumbents are responsible for performing on‑site inspections of boilers, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation systems and other mechanical HVAC and refrigeration equipment to ensure the installation, repair, and alterations comply with applicable codes.

• Investigates residential and commercial furnaces and air‑conditioner systems for wiring, motors, and other mechanical parts.
• Inspects boilers, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration and mechanical systems and equipment for compliance with applicable city codes.
• Verifies licenses for persons operating high‑pressure boilers.
• Seals all boilers found to be unsafe.
• Inspects construction of newly installed equipment.
• Completes inspection reports with recommendations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

  Operates and adjusts equipment such as motor vehicles and flashlights.

  Utilizes advisory data and information such as permit applications, blueprints, maps, reports, and codes.
• Mathematical aptitude:
  Performs basic arithmetic and calculates percentages and decimals.
• Functional reasoning:
  Applies principles of systems, interprets instructions, and uses independent judgment to adapt methods and standards.
• Situational reasoning:
  Exercises judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against criteria.

• May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, pollen, fumes, temperature extremes, and noise.
• Must lift inspection tools up to 50 pounds and perform stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, and climbing for inspections.
• Must recognize colors, shapes, sounds, and odors to complete inspections.

An associate’s degree or completion of a two‑year training program in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating technology from a recognized trade school or junior college; plus two years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining high pressure boilers and/or refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Proof of license must be provided immediately upon application and may be requested at any time.

To be eligible for veteran’s preference points, applicants must submit a copy of their DD‑214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the application or upon request.

City residents who pass the examination and do not receive any other preference receive a five‑point preference. An additional one‑point preference is added if the resident receives any other preference.
