- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of mainframe software engineers
- Own end-to-end delivery for a portfolio of mainframe applications across GM business value streams
- Translate business priorities into an engineering roadmap and maintain the backlog
- Balance new features, technical debt, and modernization work
- Provide technical direction on mainframe design patterns, data models, performance tuning, and system integration
- Drive adoption of Git-based workflows, code review standards, CI/CD automation, test automation, and repeatable validation
- Champion secure and thoughtful use of AI in the engineering lifecycle
- Partner with platform, SRE, and security teams on availability, observability, compliance, and operational excellence
- Use engineering metrics to guide decisions and continuously improve team processes
- Represent the team with product, business, and leadership stakeholders, communicating status, risks, and trade-offs
- Support GM’s mainframe ecosystem modernization toward an automated and AI-enabled software factory
- 10+ years of experience delivering and supporting mainframe solutions in a large enterprise environment
- Strong technical background with PL/I and/or COBOL, JCL, IMS (TM/DB), Db2 (or similar), and scheduling solutions such as IWS and CA7
- 2+ years of software engineering manager experience and/or 7+ years of technical lead experience, including coaching, performance management, and team building
- Proven experience leading cross-functional delivery efforts with business, architecture, operations, and vendors
- Hands-on experience with Agile delivery (Scrum or Kanban), incremental releases, code review, and automated testing
- Practical experience with Git-based source control, preferably Git Hub, and CI/CD tooling such as Git Hub Actions or Azure Dev Ops
- Ability to operate in a hybrid environment integrating mainframe, distributed, and cloud applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent work experience
- Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future
- Must be willing to report to Warren, MI or Austin, TX at least three times per week
- Willingness to travel less than 25%
Demonstrates extensive experience in leading mainframe software engineering teams, delivering complex solutions, and driving modernization efforts. Proficient in managing cross-functional collaborations and utilizing engineering metrics to enhance team performance and operational excellence.
