Project Accountant
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Project Accountant to support the financial success of our civil engineering projects. This role partners closely with Project Managers to oversee project setup, budgeting, billing, and financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
Why This Role MattersAs a Project Accountant, you are a strategic partner to our project teams. Your ability to provide reliable financial insights and maintain strong financial controls directly contributes to project performance and overall company success.
Responsibilities- Set up new projects in the ERP system, including contract values, billing terms, revenue methods, and budgets
- Monitor project performance, including labor, expenses, consultant costs, and profitability
- Analyze budget vs. actual performance and earned revenue
- Collaborate with Project Managers to maintain accurate budgets and forecasts
- Ensure proper project coding and cost allocation
- Prepare and process client invoices (time & materials, lump sum, and unit-based billing)
- Manage progress billing and percentage-of-completion calculations
- Review unbilled labor, expenses, and WIP to ensure timely invoicing
- Apply appropriate revenue recognition methods (WIP-based, percent complete, milestone-based)
- Ensure billing aligns with contract terms and client requirements
- Support retainage tracking and billing
- Monitor accounts receivable and assist with collections
- Review aging reports and escalate issues when necessary
- Partner with Project Managers to support collection strategies
- 3–7 years of relevant experience in a project-based accounting environment
- Experience in civil engineering, architecture, or professional services preferred
- Strong understanding of job costing and budgeting
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience is preferred over a degree, but a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is welcome
- Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Deltek Vision, Deltek Ajera, or similar ERP systems
