Lynn University seeks an Assistant Professor of Technical Theater with a strong background as a performing arts technical director for the Drama Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Applicants must have focus and the understanding of scenic design, set-building and theatrical production management procedures, and protocols. Bonus areas for the applicant in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting design, lighting consoles, and related software;
experience with proper audio systems procedures, practices, and related software;
All applicants should also have knowledge of theater rigging and standard practices.
The Drama Department has grown in stature and recognition, as well in enrollments since its inception in 2016. The Assistant Professor of Technical Theater will be responsible for teaching classes, serving as technical director for program productions, and recruiting new students into the program. The assistant professor will also be responsible for guiding the development of students specializing in musical theatre through mentorship and evaluation.
Furthermore, the assistant professor will assist with departmental tasks including production planning, curriculum development, assessment, and recruitment. The assistant professor will help support the artistic vision of the institution by collaborating with different university departments ensuring all stakeholders are supported and guided to foster a highly collaborative creative environment.
Job Description:
Essential duties and responsibilities
Serve as lead scenic designer and set builder for all Lynn drama productions and as undergraduate faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences teaching courses.
Serve as technical director for Drama program productions.
Supervise student workers during Drama program productions.
Serve as a recruitment ambassador for the drama department. Participate in recruitment activities such as phone and email communications, open houses, high-school visits, and virtual and in-person auditions. Candidate must be able to travel to recruitment conferences throughout the United States.
Mentor students majoring in drama and provide academic and career advice. Guide students in their artistic and professional development.
Assist with departmental tasks including production planning, curriculum development and assessment.
Attend department, college, and university meetings.
Coordinates with Director and Artistic staff regarding practicalities of productions and scheduling of venues. Conducts production meetings with staff, student workers, and outside producers to determine task assignments.
Oversees maintenance of shop tools/equipment; monitors theater inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials; performs theater maintenance.
Works with Director and building Technical Director to develop and implement operational procedures and ensures compliance by staff. Ensures personnel perform tasks in compliance with departmental safety standards.
Performs administrative office tasks as required.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Applicants must have focus in and understanding of scenic design, set-building and theatrical production management procedures, and protocols.
Applicants should have knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting design, lighting consoles, and related software; experience with proper audio systems procedures, practices, and related software.
Applicant should also have knowledge of theater rigging and standard practices.
Applicants must have proficiency with computers and software including Vectorworks Spotlight as well as Microsoft Office.
Applicants must be able to exercise good judgment and communicate effectively both orally and written.
Applicants must have have strong organizational skills and ability to work in a multiple task environment.
Applicants must be able to supervise staff and student workers and maintain positive interpersonal relations with faculty, staff, students, and clients.
Applicants should have effective instructional methods.
Minimum qualificationsMFA in Technical Theater. If candidate does not hold an MFA, candidate may provide equivalent professional experience as justification.
Professional experience as a technical director.
Preferably, network of professional colleagues and connections.
Preferably, candidate is still actively working in the industry.
Physical Requirements Ability to climb a ladder, operate aerial work platforms, and be comfortable working lity to lift over 50lbs and stand for long periods of time, occasionally work overhead.
