Scholarly Communications and OER Librarian

Position Overview

The Scholarly Communications and OER Librarian reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Access, Research, and Learning Services and provides strategic leadership, campus‑wide outreach, and consultative support on scholarly communications, copyright, open access, and open education. This non‑tenure‑track faculty position (Assistant or Associate University Librarian, 12‑month contract) focuses on delivering programming, consultations, and initiatives that promote faculty, student, and staff engagement with OER, scholarly publishing, and open pedagogy to support research productivity and student success.

• Act as the primary contact for scholarly communication questions and initiatives, strengthening the Libraries’ leadership role across the university.
• Lead development and implementation of policies related to copyright, open licensing, data sets, and Creative Commons attribution.
• Deliver presentations, educational programs, and workshops that empower faculty, staff, students, and community partners on copyright, authors’ rights, open access publishing, institutional repositories, and related topics.
• Promote and market open access, OER, and other scholarly communication initiatives in collaboration with liaison librarians, external relations, and campus stakeholders.
• Support grant applications and faculty adoption of OER, including course‑material affordability initiatives and text‑book reserve programs.
• Advocate for open practices campus‑wide, maintain the institutional repository, and provide periodic assessments of the scholarly communication environment.
• Participate in university committees, liaison programs, and engagement events, contributing to the Libraries’ key performance indicators and strategic initiatives.

• ALA‑accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
• Minimum of three years of experience emphasizing scholarly communication issues in academic, special, or research libraries.
• Knowledge of U.S. and international copyright law and policy, particularly regarding Fair Use, digitization, and digital humanities projects.
• Knowledge of OER, course‑material affordability initiatives, library course reserves, interlibrary loan, controlled digital lending, and shared collections.
• Knowledge of institutional repositories, open access publishing models, publishing agreements, Creative Commons licenses, predatory publishing, researcher IDs (ORCID), and related scholarly communication topics.
• Experience providing instruction sessions, presentations, and consultations to users and advising colleagues and administrators.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member and leader, with flexibility, creativity, and professionalism.
• Experience in teaching and facilitating learning of individuals.
• Strong organization, oral and written communication, and information‑technology skills.
• Initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and exceptional work ethic.
• Ability to analyze and adapt to change in a rapidly growing institution.

• Second Master’s degree and/or doctorate in process.
• Five years of experience emphasizing scholarly communication issues in scholarly or publishing settings.
• Enthusiasm for emerging trends such as AI, data science, research data management, open scholarship, and scholarly impact.
• Experience performing assessments and creating reports for stakeholders.
• Experience supporting institutional repositories and digital libraries from an intellectual property perspective.
• Higher‑education outreach and engagement experience.
• Record of service on professional committees and leadership roles.
• Experience using Scopus/Sci Val, Digital Commons, integrated library systems, discovery tools, Canvas LMS, and multi‑campus environments.

• Strong knowledge of U.S. and international copyright law and policy for digitization contexts.
