Responsibilities
  • Process crime scenes to search, recover, and document latent fingerprints, trace evidence, DNA, and other physical evidence.
  • Take photographs, videotapes, and prepare sketches to record evidence collection.
  • Respond to hospitals and autopsies to collect evidence for criminal investigations.
  • Prepare crime scene reports for court presentation and provide courtroom testimony.
  • Operate digital photo lab and maintain equipment and image files.
  • Gather and mark evidence, maintain chain of custody, create plaster casts, and process evidence in the crime lab using powders, chemicals, and alternative light sources.
  • Test and maintain laboratory equipment and prepare lineups.
  • Conduct training of new employees in crime scene processing procedures.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Physical Requirements
  • Background check includes criminal background, employment verification, reference checks, MVR, workers' compensation, credit check, fingerprinting, polygraph, neighborhood check, psychological examination, drug/alcohol screen, physical and pulmonary function test.
  • Physical demands:
    Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs., push up to 75 lbs.; wear PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, goggles, respirator, safety shoes, coveralls, gloves, face shield, and biohazard suit; tolerance to extreme temperatures, noise, heights, confined spaces, vibration, radiation, dust, chemicals, toxic metals, animal/insect bites, gases, smoke, irritants, asphyxiants, and blood borne pathogens.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: thorough knowledge of police department rules, investigative techniques, evidence laws, crime scene processing, secure evidence, documentation, photography operation, and basic automobile operation.
  • Education:

    Associate's Degree or technical certificate in forensic science, criminalistics, or related field, or equivalent of two (2) years of on‑the‑job experience as a Crime Scene Technician.
  • Experience:

    Preference for individuals with both a degree and relevant experience.
  • Special requirements:
    Valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
  • Must successfully pass a complete background investigation satisfying the employer prior to appointment.
Benefits Summary
  • Annual Leave: accrue per salary grade; maximum 360 hours; cash out up to 40 hours for permanent status; accrual schedule: 0‑5 years 8 hrs/month, 5‑10 years 10 hrs/month, 10‑15 years 12 hrs/month, 15+ years 14 hrs/month.
  • Sick Leave: 8 hrs/month; unused balance paid at 50% annually up to 960 hrs, retirement payout of 50% after 5 years continuous service.
  • Health Insurance:
    Employee medical, dental, and vision fully covered by City; employee contribution for other plans.
  • Retirement Plans:
    Defined Contribution plan with 7% City contribution, 1‑year vesting;
    Defined Benefit plan with 10‑year vesting, 2.00% multiplier, 7.75% employee contribution.
  • Holidays: 14 per year, including 11 recognized holidays and 3 floating; floating allocation depends on hire date.
  • Funeral Leave:
    Up to 3 workdays (in‑state) and 5 (out‑of‑state).
  • Tuition Reimbursement:
    Full‑time employees eligible under City policy, subject to departmental funds.
  • Military Leave:
    Paid leave up to 30 days per calendar year for reservists attending annual training.
  • Employee Assistance Program:
    Five face‑to‑face counseling sessions for employees, spouses, and eligible dependents.
