Assistant Building Official
Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, the Assistant Building Official performs advanced administrative, supervisory and technical duties related to the enforcement of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and related codes. The role includes assisting the Chief Building Official in the management of the division and serving as the Chief Building Official in their absence. The position requires strong time management skills, self‑direction, and the ability to review plans for consistency with state and city codes, perform field inspections, issue notices of violations, communicate required corrections, re‑inspect when deficiencies are corrected, and support chief inspectors and subordinate work groups.
The Assistant Building Official will be required to perform post‑tropical cyclone damage assessment or other special work details. The position is required to work in office or in the field within the City of Boca Raton during regular business hours and may be on call for building related emergencies after hours or over weekends.
Responsibilities- Assist the Chief Building Official in the daily management of the division and serve as the Building Official in their absence
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the building plan review and inspection processes under the supervision and direction of the Chief Building Official.
- Enforce laws, ordinances, and codes relating to the construction and alteration of buildings as delegated by the Chief Building Official.
- Review and evaluate building plans for compliance with all applicable codes, including complex multi‑story development.
- Process certificates of completion and notices of violation related to construction.
- Monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of subordinates’ activities.
- Communicate with and respond to inquiries from members of the public and staff regarding all aspects of code requirements, review and inspection processes, and application comments in a timely and professional manner.
- Investigate complaints regarding all aspects of the building permit process and make appropriate recommendations to the Chief Building Official.
- Prepare evidence and testify in code violation cases.
- Assist the Chief Building Official in maintaining professional relationships and communicating with federal, state, and local officials to promote uniform interpretation and enforcement of laws and regulations.
- Assist the Chief Building Official in recommending amendments and additions to City Codes related to building codes and inspections.
- Participate at the Emergency Operations Center during emergency situations and assist the Chief Building Official in implementing preparedness and recovery plans.
- Use related business systems, including software related to inspections, plan review, and communication, and demonstrate ability to learn evolving technologies.
- Act as a staff representative on building division matters before various boards, including preparing written reports and oral presentations as necessary.
- Apply regulations and codes in an appropriate and consistent manner.
- Prepare reports and correspondence on building code inspection compliance matters.
- Present cases to the Builder’s Board of Adjustment and Appeals.
- Coordinate plan review activities with the Permitting/Licensing section.
- Supervise and evaluate subordinate employees in a professional manner.
- Principles and practices of plan review and inspection issues relating to building, electrical, and plumbing code enforcement.
- Building, construction, engineering, and structural engineering principles and practices; comprehensive knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws regarding building code enforcement.
- All types of building construction, materials, methods, and at least one area of technical expertise in either the structural, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing fields.
- City and state building codes and related laws and ordinances.
