Research Technician

Join D-Wave as we launch our state-of-the-art facility in Boca Raton, Florida, opening in 2027. We are seeking a Research Technician to be among the first members of our Lab Ops team, helping establish laboratory operations and support the testing of D-Wave's next generation of quantum computing technology.

In this hands-on role, you will support the operation of dilution refrigerators and payload systems used for quantum processor testing. You will play a key role in launching and stabilizing the new laboratory while helping establish safe, reliable, and efficient operating practices.

Your journey begins with a fully supported training and knowledge-transfer temporary assignment of up to 180 days at our headquarters in Burnaby, British Columbia, where you will gain immersive, hands-on experience with D-Wave's cutting-edge quantum systems, laboratory equipment, and operating procedures. This position is located in Boca Raton, FL; where you will return after your temporary assignment and work closely with the Lab Ops Team Lead to support day-to-day operations, troubleshoot issues, and take increasing ownership of laboratory readiness and execution.

This role is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented and technically curious individual who enjoys working with complex systems, follows established procedures, learns quickly, and is motivated to develop the skills needed to become an increasingly independent contributor in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

What You'll Do
  • Support dilution refrigerator cooldowns and warmups, including system preparation, payload installation and removal, line purges, valve operations, thermometry checks, and cooldown monitoring.
  • Assist with resistance measurements, microwave systems trace collection, and basic quality checks.
  • Accurately record cooldown data, payload information, system configurations, and state changes in Lab Ops Hub .
  • Perform first-pass troubleshooting and assist with routine maintenance in coordination with the Team Lead and Lab Infrastructure management.
  • Coordinate with Sample Prep & Packaging, Controls & Lab Ops Tools, and other partner teams to support payload readiness, data capture, and laboratory throughput.
  • Help establish Florida lab operations by documenting workflows, improving procedures, and applying the practices learned during the Canadian assignment.
  • Follow approved procedures and safety requirements, take ownership of assigned tasks, and escalate technical or operational risks appropriately.
  • Provide cross-team operational support as needed during the Florida lab ramp-up.
Required
  • 2+ years of demonstrated practical skills and applied technical knowledge, including at least two years of hands-on technical experience.
  • Experience working with laboratory instrumentation, experimental hardware, or another technical operating environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and ability to follow detailed procedures consistently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, respond to changing priorities, and work increasingly independently after training.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and develop hands-on cryogenic operating skills.
  • A degree or technical diploma in engineering, physics, or related field is valued but not required. Experience with cryogenic or vacuum systems is an asset.
Assignment and Eligibility Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to temporarily relocate to Burnaby, British Columbia, for a short-term international assignment for required onsite training assignment lasting up to 180 days.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain authorization to work in Canada for the duration of the temporary assignment.
  • D-Wave will cover eligible costs associated with the required short-term international assignment and training period. Additional details will be provided during the hiring process.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and travel to customer and company sites across North America and Europe.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.
Work Environment
  • Initial onsite work in Burnaby, British Columbia, followed by permanent onsite work in Boca Raton, Florida.
  • Frequent hands-on work with cryogenic fluids, vacuum systems, instrumentation, and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Routine use of personal protective equipment and adherence to laboratory safety procedures.
  • Occasional irregular or after-hours work may be required during cooldowns and other time-sensitive operations.
A D-Waver's DNA

  • We practice straight talk and listen generously to each other with empathy. We value different opinions and points of view. We ensure that we connect outside as well as inside to learn from others and inspire each other.
