Program Overview
The City of Boca Raton has established a paid Vocational Apprenticeship Program. Apprentices receive compensation in the form of an hourly wage for part‑time work (up to 25 hours per week). Apprentices are designated as unclassified employees and are not eligible for benefits.
Apprentice Requirements & Responsibilities- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, or technical vocational education/training.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Complete an online application form.
- Complete required testing if applicable.
- Pass a background check.
- Fulfill any prerequisite OSHA or other mandated training, if applicable.
- Be available for an in‑person interview (telephone interviews may be arranged).
- Work part‑time, but no more than 25 hours per week (or an average of 25 hours per week over a one‑year period).
- Attend a mandatory orientation session and required training sessions.
- Adhere to all City and Department policies.
- Follow Department directives and complete assignments timely and satisfactorily.
- Participate in Goal Setting, Performance Evaluation sessions and an Exit Interview with Human Resources.
- Good moral character.
- Good communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Ability to lift, carry or push 50 pounds.
- Valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six points in a three‑year period.
- Basic knowledge and training in one or more of the following:
Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Welding, Machining, Carpentry, Construction, Instrumentation, Computer Repair & programming. - No use of cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco products for at least one year prior to hire and during employment; abstain while on and off duty.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, noise, etc.
- Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protection equipment.
Minimum commitment of six months, preferably one year.
Available PositionsTasks involve intermittent physical labor including reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Must be able to climb a ladder. PPE required includes hard hat, safety glasses, goggles, safety harness, safety shoes or boots, and gloves. Exposure to extreme temperatures, heights, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, electrical hazards, moving mechanical parts, and confined spaces may occur.
