Program Overview
The Apprenticeship Program offers challenging and meaningful tasks for the Apprentice in their field of choice. Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the United States, be either a high school graduate or have achieved the equivalent of a high school diploma or some technical vocational education/training, and be at least 18 years of age. Apprenticeships are offered on an ongoing basis depending upon the needs of participating Departments.
All Apprentices receive compensation for hours worked in the form of an hourly wage. All Apprenticeships are part‑time and Apprentices are designated as unclassified employees, ineligible for any benefits or additional compensation.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- High school diploma, equivalent, or some technical vocational education/training
- At least 18 years of age
- Complete an online application form
- Complete required testing, if applicable
- Pass a background check
- Fulfill any pre‑requisite OSHA or other mandated training, if applicable
- Be available for an in‑person interview (over‑the‑phone interviews may be arranged)
- Work part‑time, but no more than 25 hours per week (or an average of 25 hours per week over a one year period)
- Attend a mandatory orientation session and required training sessions
- Adhere to all City and Department policies
- Follow Department directives and complete assignments timely and at least in a satisfactory manner
- Take part in goal setting, performance evaluation sessions and an exit interview with Human Resources
Utility Services provides water and wastewater services for about 130,000 customers in the City of Boca Raton. The Department employs over 150 full‑time employees and meets the regulatory requirements of the industry. The Vocational Apprenticeship Program offers individuals the opportunity to acquire skills through practical on‑the‑job work experience, and provides the City with potential future permanent employees.
ELIGIBILITY- Graduation from high school or attendance at an accredited technical vocational school or community college
- Available to work Monday through Friday between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm
- A desire to pursue a career in municipal government
- Good moral character, strong communication skills, work ethic, ability to follow written and verbal directions, and ability to work well with others
- Ability to lift, carry or push 50 pounds
- Possession of a valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license with no more than six points in a three‑year period
- Basic knowledge and training in plumbing, electrical installation, welding, machining, carpentry, construction, instrumentation, or computer repair and programming
- Abstain from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to hire, and throughout employment
- Work in adverse weather conditions, noise, and other environmental factors
- Wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE)
Requires a minimum commitment of six months, preferably one year.
AVAILABLE POSITIONSTasks involve intermittent physical demands such as reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching; lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling articles weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance; climbing ladders; wearing hard hats, safety glasses, goggles, harnesses, safety shoes or boots, and gloves. Exposure to extreme temperatures, heights, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, electrical hazards, moving mechanical parts, and confined spaces may occur.
