General Statement of Job
The Traffic Signal Technician I performs intermediate technical work in the repair, maintenance and installation of traffic signals, various traffic control devices, Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) components and street lighting; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Functions- Tests, installs, repairs, and maintains traffic signal infrastructure components including controllers, amplifiers, vehicle/pedestrian detectors, switches, relays, flashers, conduit, signal wire, support poles, cabinets, signal heads and related equipment on a scheduled or emergency basis.
- Checks coordination of the signal system and makes adjustments as required.
- Performs streetlight wiring, installation, and maintenance.
- Inspects, cleans, and replaces lenses and frayed wiring; elevates and aligns signal heads; changes burnt out lamps;
- Responds to emergency calls and takes necessary action on rotating on-call/standby status.
- Makes routine operational checks on traffic signals and prepares reports on activities.
Related tasks :
- Maintains aerial truck; checks fluid levels, tires, etc.; ensures truck is adequately equipped and supplied.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic digital traffic control equipment.
- Basic principles and theories of electricity and the operation of electronic equipment.
- Safety precautions and occupational hazards related to the electrical trade.
- Traffic signal operations, phasing, and sequence methods
- Vehicular and pedestrian detection methods
Skilled in:
- Following oral and written instructions and working from rough sketches or detailed specifications.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair traffic signal equipment
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with associates
Ability to:
- Work outside under inclement weather conditions.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Ability to obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Level 1 Certification within 2 (two) years of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- One (1) year of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic components necessary to operate traffic control or similar electrical devices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I Certification
- Education in Electronics and/or Electrical Work
- Experience in streetlights and traffic signal electrical repair work
