Staff Cloud Engineer Job Description Summary
As a Staff Cloud Engineer, you will spearhead efforts to ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of our AWS cloud infrastructure. This role is designed for high‑level individual contributors who will lead one of three specialized domains:
Data Streaming (Kafka), Database Architecture, or AWS Applications Development. You will define and implement best practices for cloud architecture across a broad portfolio of applications. With a consistent presence in our Boca Raton, FL office (3 days/week), you will foster high‑bandwidth collaboration and mentorship.
- Collaborate with staff/architect group to produce standardized, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure guardrails and best practices for development teams to deploy safely and quickly to production, with an emphasis on developer self‑service.
- Lead technical strategy in the following areas:
- Streaming:
Architect, build and operate high‑throughput event‑driven systems using technologies like Apache Kafka, working with development teams to enforce best practices and with cloud engineering to ensure those practices are engineered into our platform. - Database:
Architect, build and operate high‑throughput event‑driven systems using technologies like AWS Aurora, RDS, and No
SQL, working with development teams to enforce best practices and with cloud engineering to ensure those practices are engineered into our platform; lead complex migrations, sharding strategies, and performance tuning. - AWS application development:
Serve as the cloud lead for a subset of applications to guide their evolution toward efficient and standardized consumption of public cloud services, especially as it pertains to migration toward microservices running on Kubernetes.
- Streaming:
- Implement and refine monitoring solutions using observability tools such as Datadog, ensuring proactive issue identification and efficient resource utilization.
- Lead the development of reusable IaC modules using tools like Terraform or Ansible to eliminate manual configuration.
- Ensure strict adherence to AWS security standards and data protection regulations (SOC2/HIPAA) while balancing cost implications.
- Mentor junior and senior team members, fostering a culture where every engineer is a technical leader in their area of expertise.
- Engage in face‑to‑face architectural white‑boarding and cross‑functional planning from our Boca Raton headquarters.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 8 years in Cloud Engineering, SRE, software engineering, or a similar role, with a proven track record of solving complex problems in large‑scale public cloud environments (AWS preferred).
- Extensive experience managing AWS services (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, Route
53) or similar services in another cloud platform. - Deep proficiency with Terraform, Helm, and other cloud‑native technologies.
- Proficiency in a high‑level language (Python, Java, Node, Go, or others) preferred.
- Hands‑on experience with Kubernetes at scale.
- Demonstrated mastery in at least one specialized area (Distributed Streaming, Relational/Non‑relational Databases, or application development in AWS).
- Able to participate in an occasional on‑call rotation to address high‑priority production issues.
