Job Title: Crossing Guard
Reports To: Chief Safety and Security
Pay Grade: AUCG
Workdays: 180
Minimum Salary: $20.00 per hour
Contract Status: Temporary At-Will
Type of Assignment: Non-Exempt
Funding: Local & City funded. This is a temporary part-time position (not eligible for benefits). Employment is contingent upon the availability of funds.
Position SummaryWork under minimal supervision to assist children and others to safely cross the street at assigned intersections during designated hours.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements
- Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the candidate.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
- Previous experience working with children in a school setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of traffic safety regulations.
- Ability to identify and respond quickly to traffic safety hazards.
- Ability to communicate instructions effectively with both children and adults.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions.
- Must complete a training program in traffic direction as defined by the basic peace officer course curriculum established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Standards and Education.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist children and other community members to cross the street at assigned intersections during designated hours safely.
- Identify potential traffic safety hazards and respond quickly to protect children and avoid incidents.
- Ensure a smooth and reasonable flow of both vehicle and foot traffic.
- Follow and uphold district safety requirements and report traffic violations and student misconduct in accordance with district procedures.
- Communicate safety and traffic rules to students and parents as needed.
- Correct unsafe conditions when possible and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor as soon as practicable.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Regularly monitor district email for pertinent communication.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and seminars as scheduled.
- Daily attendance at work and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
- Keep informed of and comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
- Comply with all district routines and regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- None.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Handheld traffic signs, traffic cones, reflective safety attire.
- Posture: Prolonged standing. Frequent walking, prolonged standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Motion: Repetitive hand motions, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching.
- Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
- Environment: Work outside (prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, sunlight, and humidity); constant exposure to noise and vehicle exhaust; work around moving vehicles and on slippery and uneven surfaces.
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions and prolonged or irregular hours; may work alone.
