We are seeking an exceptional person for a Transfer Car Operator at our sawmill located in Bogalusa, LA
.
You will be responsible for operating transfer cars, and specialized vehicles used to move materials or products within a facility. These transfer cars typically run on tracks or rails and transport items between different areas, such as warehouses, production lines, or loading docks. The operator ensures safe movement, loading, and unloading of materials using these transfer cars.
Responsibilities:- The operator drives electric-powered transfer (flat) cars to move lumber between loading, drying, and storage areas. They ensure safe transportation within the facility.
- Using a winch, the operator loads and unloads kilns with lumber. They align the transfer car rails with those in the kiln, hook up the winch cable, and move the lumber as needed. Will be responsible for keeping the breakdown hoist continuously loaded with carloads of lumber.
- The operator transfers lumber to designated dry kilns for drying. After the lumber is dry, they remove it from the kiln and transfer it to storage or the processing department.
- Regularly inspecting and maintaining transfer cars to ensure proper functioning is part of their duties.
- Will work with kiln operators when the planer mill is not running.
- Be responsible for housekeeping around the kilns and fuel loading area (broken boards, trash & dust).
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a warehouse, manufacturing, or logistics environment is preferred.
- Familiarity with operating transfer cars, forklifts, or other material‑handling equipment.
- For transfer car operators working in rail yards or trans‑loading facilities, experience with rail operations and safety protocols is valuable.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical principles and experience in troubleshooting minor issues is preferred.
- Knowledge of safety procedures, including proper material handling, load securement, and rail safety rules.
- Operators must pay close attention to their surroundings, track alignment, and load positioning.
- Effective communication with team members, supervisors, and other personnel is essential.
- Previous experience operating a Transfer Car is preferred but not required.
- Able to push, pull, and move up to 50+ pounds
- Safely work around extremely high temperatures
- Able to work a rotating night shift including weekends.
- Have a proven job history of staying at most jobs for a long period.
- Exceptional attendance record at current or previous jobs.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred
$19.13 per hour
