Position: STARS Program Assistant 2025-2026

Supervisor: Director of STARS Program
Salary: $16.00 per hour

Work Schedule

Work Schedule: this is a substitute position and will work on an as‑needed basis

School Year Student Contact Days:

  • AM Shift – 6:20 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. (1.5 hours)
  • PM Shift – 2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (3.5 hours)

STARS Camp Days*

  • 6 hour shift scheduled between 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • * This program will run during the school year on some non‑student contract days (School holidays, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc.). The specific schedule is TBD.
Summary:

The STARS Program Assistant is responsible for providing quality care and an enriching learning experience for school‑age children enrolled in Orland 135.

Qualifications / Experience
  • Interest in working with school‑age children
  • Good communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Successful experience supervising children grades K–8
  • Dependable
  • Possesses good judgement
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Possesses the ability to communicate and follow written and oral directions
  • Ability to build strong relationships with families and coworkers
  • Be a self‑starter and perform the job duties with limited supervision
  • Prior work experience at a before/after school program, preferred
  • Experience with Reg Werks and Rev Trak, preferred
  • Experience using iPad, preferred
  • Responsibilities
  • Create a safe and nurturing environment where children can play and learn
  • Provide a warm caring atmosphere for all participants
  • Provide assistance with homework and encourage academic progress
  • Cultivate positive relationships with families and staff
  • Follow STARS Program student check‑in/check‑out procedures
  • Properly document and communicate any student incidents to supervisor
  • Serve as a "good will" ambassador to the public for the program and Orland School District 135
  • Interact with children in a safe and respectful manner
  • Follow structured daily program schedule for students attending the STARS program
  • Properly identify self as Program Assistant by wearing District issued shirt and
  • Comply with local, state, and federal laws as well as district policy and regulations related to the STARS program
  • Provide participants with appropriate leadership during the STARS program
  • Supervise at all times students enrolled in the STARS program
  • Accompany children to campus building, as needed
  • Prepare daily breakfast/snack for participants
  • Maintain open communication between staff and school personnel
  • Follow proper attendance reporting procedures
  • Oversee proper utilization of equipment and materials
  • Request supplies as needed
  • Maintain overall cleanliness and appearance of STARS program areas
  • Ensure STARS Program is cleaned and cleared of all materials at end of shift
  • Report any problems that arise to supervisor
  • Attend/participate in required trainings and staff meetings
  • Physical Abilities and Working Conditions
    • Vision: (which may be corrected) to read small print; view a computer screen for prolonged periods
    • Hearing: (which may be corrected) to answer telephones and tolerate exposure to noisy conditions
    • Speech: to be understood in face‑to‑face communications; to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone
    • Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head
    • Lower Body Mobility: to bend at waist; stoop; twist and turn torso
    • Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects that weigh as much as 25 pounds on a frequent basis
    • Environmental Requirements: encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors
    • Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; business math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copying, comparing, compiling and coordinating information and records
