In this exciting and active role, you’ll assist the lead instructor in teaching youth and families (ages 12+) the fundamentals of sailing. From learning boat terminology and water safety to practicing maneuvering techniques on open, flat water, you’ll help create a supportive and engaging environment where participants can build skills and confidence.

Work is performed in a class setting and takes place both indoors and outdoors—on the dock and out on the water. You’ll play a key role in ensuring lessons run smoothly, participants stay safe, and everyone has a positive and memorable experience.

This position is open to applicants age 16 and older.

  • Ensures the well-being and safety of program participants.
  • Works with instructor and supervisor to prepare materials and supplies for class.
  • Works with instructor to respond to behavioral and emergency concerns.
  • Makes sure sailing equipment and supplies are in good working order and notifies instructor when items need repair or replacement.
  • A key part of every employee’s job is to serve as a City of Boise ambassador engaging with participants, families, and the general public at every opportunity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Requires education and/or experience to attain the following:

  • 16 years or older.
  • Ability to deal with individuals in a friendly and tactful manner.
  • Work varied hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations.
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • One year experience working with youths from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Three years’ experience with the sport of sailing and power boating.
  • US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Certification.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Certification for Idaho.
  • Safe Sport Training Certification.
Special Requirements

Applicants must be able to pass:

  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

    • In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand and walk.

The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures and in wet and humid conditions.
