Human Biology with Lab (BIOS
150)

In this introductory course students study the biological principles governing the normal state of the human body with an emphasis on the structure and function of major organ systems. Through virtual labs, case studies, discussions, and other learning activities, students explore core concepts in biochemistry, biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology to gain an understanding of how human body systems normally work together to maintain homeostasis and respond to disease.

The course will also cover topics such as human development, fluid dynamics, reproduction, nutrition, and the body's defenses against illness.

Topics include:

• Demonstrate how anatomical root words give rise to anatomical and medical terminology.
• Describe the basic structure and function of human cells including cell transportation and cell division.
• Explain the roles of the four common biological macromolecules.
• Explain the basic structure,function and organization of tissues within the organ systems in the normal state.
• Recall how various factors including nutrition, environment, and exercise influence the state of the human body.
• Describe common disease states and disorders and their effects on normal function.
• Describe the process of reproduction including the flow of genetic information and basic genetic calculations.

Responsibilities

• Develops and provides students with an approved Covista/Chamberlain Universitysyllabus that follows an established template,which includes the terminal course objectives.
• Organizes, prepares, and regularly revises and update all course materials.
• Conduct the course using our student focused coaching model, focused on proactive outreach using phone, email communication, and use of other communication technologies
• Uses appropriate technological options for online technologies and course-related software, including Websites, e-mail, and online discussions for preparing the course and making it accessible to students.
• Models effective oral and written communications that engage the students, provide clarity, and improve student learning.
