The
Roads and Highways Practice is seeking an Engineer-in-Training
to join our Inland Northwest team in
Tri-Cities,WA;
Spokane,WA;
Coeur d’Alene,;
Pocatello, ; or
Boise, .
In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project managers to develop practical solutions for roadway and multimodal transportation projects throughout Idaho and Eastern Washington. You will gain hands‑on experience with transportation design, construction documents, engineering calculations, utility coordination, and construction support while building the technical and professional skills needed to advance your career.
Your assignments may include highways, local roadways, intersections, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, grading, drainage coordination, and utility improvements. You will use Open Roads Designer and/or Civil 3D to help transform engineering concepts into plans that can be constructed. Depending on project needs, you may also participate in site visits, field observations, and construction inspection.

DEA will provide mentorship, exposure to multidisciplinary projects, and opportunities to take on increasing responsibility as your skills develop.
What You’ll DoKey Responsibilities
:
- Support the planning and design of roadway, highway, intersection, and other transportation improvement projects.
- Prepare design calculations, exhibits, plan sheets, details, quantities, and cost estimates under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Develop and revise engineering plans using Open Roads Designer and/or Civil 3D.
- Review maps, survey information, reports, record drawings, test results, and other technical information needed for design.
- Assist with the preparation of construction documents, technical reports, specifications, and supporting project documentation.
- Coordinate with roadway, structural, drainage, traffic, environmental, survey, and other technical disciplines on multidisciplinary projects.
- Assist with utility conflict identification and coordination with public agencies and private utility providers.
- Support project organization, document control, and quality‑control reviews.
- Assist with construction‑phase services, including responses to contractor RFIs, submittal reviews, preparation of record drawings, and field observations.
- Perform construction inspection when needed for specific projects.
- Participate in project meetings, site visits, and coordination with clients and agency staff.
- Develop your technical capabilities through mentorship, training, and progressively more complex assignments.
Required Qualifications
:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- 0-3 years of Civil Engineering experience
- Exposure to Open Roads Designer and/or Civil 3D through professional experience, internships, or academic coursework.
