Job Summary /Basic Function:

The Accounting Manager leads day-to-day accounting operations and oversees a team of accountants responsible for general accounting, sub-ledgers, reconciliations, and close processes. This position reports directly to the Assistant Controller.

Duties include directing performance and managing workload of staff, reviewing staff assignments, monitoring and analyzing accounting information, and assisting in the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements.

Monitor and supervise the staff, systems and operations of a financials office. Assist with strategic financial planning, leading to insightful, accurate business decision-making. Proactively reach out to customers including students, employees, campus users and connect them to campus resources.

Department Overview:
  • Ensuring the integrity of the University’s financial accounting and reporting systems.
  • Safeguarding University assets.
  • Preparing complete, unbiased and timely disclosures and financial reports.
  • Providing effective and efficient accounting and operational support while complying with University, federal, state and regulatory financial guidelines.
Level Scope:

Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and campus wide goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls with a focus on policy and strategy implementation.

Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets and requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and tactics within one area.

Essential Functions:
  • Lead process improvement projects for functional reporting areas assigned.
  • Provide campus training and consultation related to functional reporting areas.
  • Back up support to as needed.
  • Posting journal entries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational & Team Leadership:
  • Manage and mentor a multi-tiered team, including Senior Accountants, Intermediate Accountants, and Entry-Level Accountants. Delegate responsibility for sub-functional areas and support professional development across team levels.
General Accounting & Functional Oversight:
  • Supervise technical accounting functions and key functional sub-areas.
Month, Quarter and Year-End & Reconciliations Management:
  • Oversee month-end close schedules, account reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, and support schedule preparation across all levels.
Transactional Controls & Quality:
  • Provide oversight on core transactional activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and data entry/uploads. Ensure strong internal controls and accuracy.
Collaboration & Compliance:
  • Work closely with Tax Reporting and Finance Systems teams to align on reporting, system updates, and compliance standards.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of ethics and confidentiality principles and practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, multitask and complete tasks with multiple interruptions and distractions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (GAAP).
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and report generators.
  • Knowledge or supervisory practices.
  • Ability to diffuse tense or sensitive situations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, customer service, cross-functional communication and collaboration skills.
