General Purpose

The Paint Apprentice assists in skilled sign painting and prep activities for various signage and its components. This role focuses on learning and applying various painting techniques, preparing surfaces, mixing paints, and ensuring quality finishes, all while adhering to safety regulations and production schedules. The Paint Apprentice works under general supervision, contributing to the efficient and cost-effective creation of high-quality signs.

Day in the Life

On a typical day, the Paint Apprentice reads job orders to understand project requirements, prepares surfaces by cleaning and priming, and mixes paints to match specific color requirements. They apply coatings using spray guns, brushes, or other tools and carefully inspect finished surfaces for quality. The apprentice also maintains a clean and organized work area, ensures equipment is in good working order, and assists with loading and unloading signs.

They may also deliver signs to the installation crew and perform other tasks as assigned to support the production process.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret job orders and inspect work pieces to determine necessary procedures and materials.
  • Prepare new and existing signs, sign cabinets, and lettering for painting.
  • Operate and maintain various equipment, including vibratory, compressed air, and motorized tools, and other hand tools to smooth and finish various surfaces.
  • Select and mix paint ingredients to achieve specified coatings using paddles or mechanical mixers.
  • Apply various coatings, such as primer and paint, using spray guns and other paint equipment.
  • Maintain production schedules and manage time effectively to complete paint-related tasks.
  • Examine finished surfaces for conformance to specifications and retouch any defects.
  • Load and unload signs.
  • Clean and maintain the work area for a safe and organized environment.
  • Clean and maintain painting equipment.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations to prevent on-the-job injuries.
  • Perform other related functions as necessary or as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two or more years of relevant experience in painting, including mixing and applying paints, or a combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Knowledge of mixing and spraying paints, and color theory.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Ability to operate computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • Basic math skills and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Strong work ethic, enthusiastic attitude, and high level of integrity.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, perform repetitive movements, climb ladders, crawl, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
