Youth Development
Returning citizens often return to prison within three years of release because of insufficient or negative support systems in the community. The challenges of employment, reconnecting with family, rebuilding relationships, stigma, lack of education, and difficulty accessing community resources can derail the transition back into society. The Free2
Succeed program connects mentors throughout Idaho communities with individuals close to release or currently on supervision to aid their transition and reentry.
Mentors collaborate with facility, probation, and parole staff to engage mentees in pro‑social activities, help them navigate obstacles, provide emotional support, and facilitate connections to employment, education, housing, and other resources. Staff members will enhance the efforts of IDOC by working in concert with reentry plans developed by facility case managers and supervising officers. IDOC provides mentors with training, a simple start‑up process, and resources to transform communities into safer places.
Join us in the Idaho Department of Correction as an Ameri Corps VISTA and help build the capacity and sustainability of the Free2
Succeed Mentoring Program. The VISTA member will not provide direct mentoring services but will develop systems, tools, and resources to support staff and mentors.
