Ridge to Rivers Trail Maintenance Technician (Seasonal)
Ready to trade the office for the outdoors? Join the team that keeps the Boise Foothills safe, accessible, and adventure‑ready. In this role, you’ll help maintain trails and recreation facilities throughout the foothills—doing meaningful, hands‑on work that thousands of people enjoy every day.
You’ll work under general supervision while taking pride in independent, detail‑oriented tasks that keep our trail system in top shape.
This is a seasonal position working up to 40 hours per week from March through October and is open to all interested candidates age 19 and older. If you enjoy physical work, fresh air, and making a visible impact on your community’s favorite outdoor spaces, this is a trail worth taking.
- Performs maintenance to trails throughout the Ridge to Rivers trail system. Maintenance includes tread and drainage feature reconstruction, pruning, log removal, and loose rock removal. Constructs trail features utilizing native and non‑native materials. Features include bridges, puncheons, turnpikes, retaining walls and new trail segments for trails open to foot, mountain bike, horse, and motorized users. Constructs and maintains post and rail and smooth wire fences.
- Provides information to the general public regarding trails and trail use while working in assigned areas. Helps supervisory staff lead volunteers on various trail projects.

- Six months’ experience performing general trail construction and maintenance, or similar landscaping or agricultural experience.
- Trail maintenance and construction techniques.
- Operate ATVs and mountain bikes in steep mountainous terrain.
- Utilize hand and power tools in a safe manner.
- Walk long distances over uneven terrain while carrying tools and equipment.
- Interact with the public and co‑workers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations.
- Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
- Complete assignments in a timely fashion.
- Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
- Two years’ experience building and maintaining trails.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
- City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation.

Physical EffortsWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, frequently lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch.
Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Additional physical efforts include: lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs.
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to chemicals. This position works in outdoor conditions during the summer months along dry trails and may come in contact with dogs, spiders, and snakes.
