Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership (MKWP), located in Maui, Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,286.68 - $5,498.84/Mon.
DUTIES: Responsible for planning and conducting projects in the field to implement the MKWP Watershed Management Plan for weed control strategies.
- Directs, supervises, and trains field crew in activities related to management of watershed threats from invasive plant species, including weed control, scouting/surveying, transect monitoring, and photo points.
- Records detailed field data, summarizes and coordinates data analysis using various computer programs, and writes quarterly updates, annual reports, and work plans.
- Serves as a senior member of the field crew in other natural resource programs, including fencing, animal control, and monitoring.
- Drives to field sites, orders and maintains project equipment within program budget, and ensures field operations follow safety and operational policies.
- Inputs data into GPS and computers for spatial analysis.
- Education: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Natural Resource Management, Biological Science, Environmental Science, or related field with basic/related biology/natural resources courses. (Bachelor’s Degree may substitute for two years of experience.)
- Experience: Four to six years of work experience with biological resources, conservation planning, or natural resource management, including at least one year of supervisory experience in work related to research or agriculture with a land management agency or company, or must complete minimum six supervisory training courses within twelve months. (≥4 years of experience can also be substituted with a Bachelor’s Degree.)
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of ecology and conservation in Hawai‘i, invasive plant species, field work techniques, logistical planning, data collection/management, ecosystem monitoring protocols, Hawaiian flora and fauna, watershed processes, herbicide use, and weed and ungulate control techniques.
- Abilities &
Skills:
Proficiency in herbicide application in forest environments, ArcGIS and GPS (Garmin, Locus Pro, Apps), data collection and analysis, report writing, map creation, oral and written communication, Microsoft Office, MS Access, topographic and aerial map reading, altimeter and compass use, power tool operation (chainsaw, weed eater, etc.), valid driver’s license, and hazard communication training. Must also obtain and maintain certifications in First Aid/CPR, helicopter safety, helicopter manager training, state pesticide certification, rappelling training, chainsaw training, along with completion of the online Hazard Communication training.
Qualifications
- Field experience managing threats to native Hawaiian flora and fauna and ecosystems from incipient alien plant and animal invasions.
- Experience in a resource management program protecting at-risk ecosystems, emphasizing alien plant and animal control, site restoration, biological surveys, and/or stream surveys.
- Knowledge of key invasive species and ability to recognize them.
