Postdoctoral Research Fellow

We seek applicants with research interests in igneous or metamorphic petrology and geochemistry. Candidates with expertise in thermodynamics and mineral analysis are particularly encouraged to apply. Familiarity with experimental petrology is beneficial. Interest in outreach to the public is also beneficial. The start date is flexible – ideally Jan 4, 2027, but an earlier or later start date is possible depending on an applicant's current position and commitments.

The position will be contracted initially for one year, with a second year of funding available dependent on performance. For non-US citizens, ability to obtain a work permit or visa is required. This position has an estimated duration of two (2) years.

The Post Doctoral Research Fellow will work with Dr. Matthew J. Kohn and his research group in the Department of Geosciences. The department comprises 16 full-time tenure track faculty, 7 research and teaching faculty, and 10 research scientists. Faculty and research staff in the department include expertise in igneous and metamorphic petrology, thermodynamics, major and trace element analysis, computing, and modeling.

The department houses key instrumentation, especially a LA-ICP-MS system for trace element and geochronologic analysis, and collaborates with the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering, which houses numerous electron beam instruments, including an SX5 electron probe. Other Geosciences facilities include state-of-the-art TIMS instrumentation, stable isotope analytical facilities, a benchtop SEM, and rock and mineral preparation and separation equipment.

After earning a Ph.D., the next step in the academic or research career path is often a postdoc. A postdoc is a continuation of a researcher's training that enables them to further their professional development and start to transition from student to independent researcher. Postdocs also often take additional leadership or teaching responsibilities in their laboratory or department. These positions are usually two to three years and it is not unusual for a researcher to do more than one postdoc.

Essential functions include: assessing chemical substitution mechanisms in minerals and writing balanced chemical reactions among crystal-chemically valid mineral components; collecting trace element chemical data on minerals in rocks; calibrating thermodynamically-valid thermometers and barometers; engaging in outreach activities to local educational institutions; helping develop teaching videos in thermodynamics and petrology; preparing manuscripts and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals; and presenting research results at national conferences.

The selected candidate must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and to continue working legally for the proposed term of the appointment. Excellent teamwork and communication skills. Scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer reviewed publications. Ability to acquire accurate, reproducible data. Critical eye towards consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method in general.

Excellent project and time management skills. Strong interpersonal skills and mentoring skills. Advocate for safety and ethics in the work place. Preferred: excellent quantitative, verbal, and written communication skills; expertise in quantitative analysis of minerals; interest in engaging with public; interest in helping to develop video tutorials.

Requires a minimum of a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Geosciences or a related discipline at the time of initial employment. A doctoral degree in igneous or metamorphic petrology or geochemistry is preferred. Experience with thermodynamic calculations and quantitative in situ chemical analysis of minerals is also preferred.

Salary is $65,000 annually.
