Purpose

Ensures that all customers receive fast, friendly, accurate checkout service and manages and schedules duties of Front End Clerks, Courtesy Clerks, and Customer Service Clerks.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Handle customer relations, including effective resolution of customer complaints.
  • Provide fast, friendly, courteous and excellent customer service; perform checking duties and supervisor functions on cash registers when necessary; engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
  • Serve as overflow cashier as needed.
  • Direct and supervise front‑end activities, including monitoring customer traffic and service level, coordinating and implementing front‑end and service programs, ensuring cleanliness, safety and appearance of the front‑end area, and monitoring inventories and ordering front‑end supplies.
  • Ensure front‑end operations project a positive image.
  • Maintain cash flow and controls: safe transactions, loans and pick‑ups, cash register tills, approving checks, rain checks and refunds, and monitoring check‑er money‑handling procedures.
  • Handle scan‑system emergency procedures, UPC codes not on file, hard‑to‑scan UPC codes, scanning pricing errors, system failures and other emergencies.
  • Maintain constant awareness of customer and employee safety.
  • Enforce dress and grooming standards for all employees.
  • Supervise store employees in the presence or absence of the Store Manager.
  • Handle emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents according to company guidelines and policies.
  • Replenish out‑of‑stock shelf conditions in the afternoon or as assigned.
  • Operate in a high‑stress environment requiring a high degree of flexibility.
  • Perform complete store walks, delegate tasks, and follow through to ensure completion as assigned.
  • Monitor in‑stock conditions and replace product as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment within the store.
  • Perform basic cash‑office functions.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Carry out all job duties safely, accurately and with honesty and integrity.
  • Perform other necessary and required duties as directed.
General Requirements
  • Strong communication, leadership, team‑building and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Ability to deal with the public and project a positive image.
  • Frequently lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 55 lbs.
  • Stand or walk for long periods of time; move quickly.
  • Operate and troubleshoot PCs and checkout stand equipment such as printers, scales, public announcement equipment, scanners and cash registers.
  • Supervise employees and make decisions, analyze facts and recommend disciplinary action.
  • Mental alertness necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
  • Knowledge of product variety and perishability, safety and sanitation procedures, and department policies and procedures.
  • Present a positive image to the public.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and weights and measures.
