Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The Diesel Mechanic is primarily responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of heavy‑duty highway trucks and commercial vehicles that support civil construction operations. This position focuses on over-the-road and vocational truck fleets, including dump trucks, tractor‑trailers, water trucks, service trucks, and lowboy trucks and trailers. The mechanic may also assist with the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment as needed.
The ideal candidate possesses strong diagnostic skills, extensive knowledge of diesel engines and truck systems, and a commitment to maintaining safe, reliable, and compliant fleet operations.
Shop Rate : $30 - $36 DOE
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, drive trains, suspensions, steering systems, and electrical systems on highway trucks.
- Perform preventative maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and inspections.
- Maintain and repair DOT‑regulated commercial vehicles and trailers.
- Diagnose and repair air brake systems, hydraulic systems, ABS systems, and emissions components.
- Perform annual inspections and ensure vehicles comply with DOT and FMCSA requirements.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues, including wiring, lighting, sensors, and electronic control modules.
- Service and repair dump trucks, truck tractors, lowboy trailers, water trucks, fuel trucks, and service trucks.
- Utilize diagnostic software and OEM service tools to identify and correct vehicle issues.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and minor body repairs as needed.
- Complete roadside and field service repairs when required.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and repair documentation.
- Coordinate with drivers, dispatchers, supervisors, and fleet management personnel regarding equipment status and repair scheduling.
- Assist with maintenance and repair of construction equipment during periods of fleet downtime or increased equipment demand.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and environmental regulations.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience repairing heavy‑duty diesel trucks.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, air brakes, and truck drive trains.
- Experience performing DOT inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience with Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Western Star, Mack, International, and Volvo trucks.
- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certification or equivalent certifications.
- Experience with Cummins, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR, Caterpillar, and Allison powertrain systems.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Experience in civil construction, aggregate, paving, excavation, or heavy hauling industries.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and work underneath vehicles for extended periods.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to work in shop and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
- Advanced truck diagnostics and troubleshooting skills.
- Thorough understanding of diesel engine systems and emissions components.
- Knowledge of DOT inspection requirements and commercial vehicle compliance.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize repairs and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and minimizing fleet downtime.
- Primarily works in a truck maintenance shop, equipment yard, and construction support facilities.
- Occasional field service work may be required.
- Exposure to diesel fuel, lubricants, noise, dust, vibration, and moving equipment.
- Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required to support construction operations.
