Summary

The Equipment Operator position is responsible for operating heavy equipment safely and efficiently. The role involves operating front‑end loaders, dozers, excavators, graders, compactors, and other equipment, following supervisor instructions, and maintaining equipment condition.

Essential Functions
  • Operate heavy equipment to build, level, and excavate land surfaces.
  • Use equipment to level roads or working areas, ensure proper drainage, and develop proper grade.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Maintain and turn in daily records of equipment inspection.
  • Fuel, oil, and grease equipment daily.
  • Replace worn or broken gear (teeth, cutting edges, etc.).
  • Use hand‑held mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Operate equipment safely to minimize injury, property damage, or loss of life.
  • Clean equipment as scheduled or required.
  • Advise supervisor on maintenance or repair requirements.
  • Report damage immediately to supervisor.
  • Employ heavy equipment for its intended purpose with little or no assistance.
  • Ensure equipment is safely stored.
  • Identify hazardous conditions on the job site.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Valid driver license.
  • Proficient with D‑6 and D‑8 dozers, 245, 330, and 450 excavators, and equipment safety.

Preferred:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • MSHA certification.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to read and follow plans, specifications, sketches, and grade/mapping control.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Visual acuity for details at distance and close range.
  • Spatial judgment for distances between objects.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Commitment to safety and incident reporting procedures.
  • Reliability to meet project schedules.
  • Willingness to wear protective clothing.
Physical Demands
  • Lifting 50 lbs. frequently; 100 lbs. rarely.
  • Carrying 10–50 lbs. frequently; 100 lbs. rarely.
  • Pushing/pulling 50 lbs. frequently; 100 lbs. rarely.
  • Work involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching overhead, and handling equipment.
  • Occasional kneeling, twisting, and use of foot controls.
  • Exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, ice) and variable temperatures.
  • Frequent noise and occasional vibration from equipment.
  • Potential exposure to diesel fumes and other industrial atmospheres.
  • Hazards include moving mechanical parts, electric shock, high exposed places, radiant energy, explosives, toxic or caustic chemicals.
Working Conditions

Work performed on a mine site with varied environmental conditions. Operators must be mindful of weather, noise, vibration, and hazardous materials.
