About the Role and How We Work
Our engineering culture is built around ownership and minimal process. As a Product Engineer at Ashby, you’ll take ownership over a large portion of one of our products and own projects end-to-end, wearing hats traditionally worn by product and design teams. You’ll research competitors, write product specs, create wireframes, and build the feature from start to finish.
Product Engineers at Ashby have delivered the following:
- Designed and built automated interview scheduling that calculates possible times from a pool of interviewers and presents them to candidates for selection via our responsive web app.
- Built a generalized declarative filter architecture that allows users to create complex filters for any record, compile it to SQL in the backend, and used across many user-facing features.
- Specced, designed, and implemented a feature that lets users complete signing offers entirely within Ashby, working with customers to understand requirements and integrating the implementation into other features.
We focus on providing recruiting teams with intelligent, powerful tooling that automates complex scheduling, tracks interviewer workload, and delivers actionable insights. Our goal is to give Talent Acquisition teams a high‑standard set of tools that replace manual, error‑prone processes with efficient, automated solutions.
Why You Should or Shouldn’t ApplyQualified applicants should meet the following:
- Not afraid to tackle any part of a technology stack and do what’s necessary to deliver a feature.
- Experience with projects involving significant product and technical ambiguity and thrives at the intersection of the two.
- Ability to balance speed and quality, delivering high‑quality products under tight timelines.
- Aspiring to continuously improve skills and open to feedback.
- Excellent collaborator and communicator, vetting decisions with stakeholders and working with teammates to finish projects.
- Proactive in creating leverage—automating tedious tasks, creating new abstractions, tooling to improve the experience.
Put another way, you shouldn’t apply if you:
- View a tech lead, staff, or principal engineer as primarily project‑managers or architects, while our seasoned engineers focus on building and problem‑solving.
- Require company‑driven process and structure (e.g., sprint planning, detailed project management) to complete work.
- Only want to do exciting work and avoid routine or investigative tasks.
- Cannot take a step back and consider the overall project once implementation begins.
- Have no prior ownership of projects or have only followed assigned tasks.
- Plan to mentor at early‑career engineers; we rely on engineers owning projects and have minimal mentoring opportunities.
Type Script (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, Redis. Previous experience in these technologies is not required; a love of typed languages and quick learning is appreciated.
