The Planning, Zoning & Permit Technician is responsible for the review and issuance of building permits and zoning applications, coordination of plan review and a variety of administrative duties for the Community Development department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Responsible for first point review and initial compliance check of all building permit applications.
- Review and recommend updates to ordinances, specifications and codes.
- Serve as the primary contact for the Community Development department with a focus on customer service.
- Works with all necessary departments to coordinate plan review and issuance of Review Letters.
- Works with appropriate representatives to assign all new site addressing for Commercial and Residential development.
- Serves as staff point person and assists with review for all plans submitted pertaining to Building and Zoning Regulations; issues permits when complete.
- Performs duties of cash collection and filing as necessary for permit issuance.
- Communicates courteously with the public and effectively explains regulations and guidelines.
- Issues necessary public notices, and mailings to comply with Planning & Zoning meeting and application requirements.
- Communicates with all appropriate entities to maintain accurate and up to date GIS mapping software.
- Serves as staff liaison for Planning & Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustments, to include meeting coordination, compiling packets and agendas, taking and filing of minutes.
- Completes and maintains various files, plans, records, and reports.
- Any other duties as assigned.
- Work independently and exercise initiative and judgment in the planning and execution of tasks assigned.
- Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and effective interpersonal skills at all times.
- Utilize general office equipment such as computers, 10-key, fax machines, copiers, e-mail and all similar office technology on a regular basis.
- Demonstrate the ability to support and function in a team environment.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING- Experience working well in a team with multifaceted objectives
- Two (2) years’ experience in Planning and Zoning preferred
- Knowledge of construction standards, practices, procedures, and materials.
- Considerable knowledge of municipal government operations, familiarity with City ordinances.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of Incode and Civic Gov software preferred.
- The ability to meet and deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- The ability to manage confidential information appropriately and professionally at all times.
- The ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail amidst a multitask, changing priority environment.
- Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting.
- Constant sitting, but may involve walking, or standing.
- Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and climb.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Hold and grip objects.
- Able to obtain job related certifications.
- Valid Missouri Driver’s License and must remain insurable under the City’s liability insurance policy.
