Hart House operates from a historic facility on the St. George campus, as well as a 150‑acre farm in Caledon, Ontario, offering a wide range of services through a social‑enterprise model that generates revenue to support its student‑focused programming on all three University of Toronto campuses.

General Description of Class

Under general supervision, assembles, prepares and serves food and beverage products and maintains cleanliness of the cafeteria area. May operate a cash register, receive and issue cash.

Typical Duties

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of the responsibility involved in this position. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.

Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

  • Assembles work station with appropriate products and equipment;
  • Assembles, prepares, and serves food and beverage products;
  • Cooks stir fry and grill display cooking, may cook some other items;
  • Prepares sandwiches, salads and baked premixed food products;
  • Advises and provides information to customers such as ingredients, pricing, portion size;
  • Collects dishes and tableware used by customers and places them in appropriate areas for washing;
  • Cleans table tops, counters and furniture in cafeteria and surrounding area;
  • Maintains adequate supplies of dishes, utensils and food and paper products in various receptacles for use by customers;
  • Removes soiled tableware and garbage to specific locations, sorts recyclable materials;
  • Scrubs pots and pans, and washes dishes;
  • Cleans floors, staff locker rooms and washrooms;
  • Receives and stores food and supplies; checks receiving slips for accuracy;
  • Sets up and prepares cash register, receives cash float and sets up cash appropriately; keys menu prices into cash register if required;
  • Prepares reports at the end of each shift;
  • Writes special menus and their prices on menu board;
  • Prepares condiment and dessert counters;
  • Balances cash at the end of the shift, delivers cash to accountant or locks in safe;
  • Might keep records of stores on hand;
  • Other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements for Selection

Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Experience: One year of related working experience.

Other: Physical ability to perform required duties, ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written), considerable public relations skills (courtesy and tact) and may be required to complete a University of Toronto server training program. Knowledge of food safety. Ability to work well in a team setting. Ability to handle figures rapidly.

This is a sessional position from March through December
. The total hours of work is 40 hours per week
, which includes evening and weekend hours.
