Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200 000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
- English language proficiency and basic written and spoken English (required under 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) for direct patient care positions).
- Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by an accredited agency (ACEN or CCNE) or completing a master’s‑level bridge program equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with state licensing.
- Permanent, full, active, and unrestricted RN license in the U.S. (or recognized equivalency for foreign graduates); foreign graduates may require formal degree equivalency validation from an accepted authority such as ICD.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception for candidates without licensure but meeting educational requirements; may be appointed on temporary basis while pursuing licensure.
- Preferred: BSN, Minimum Data Set (MDS) experience, at least five years of nursing experience, and familiarity with Long‑Term Care (LTC) standards and the RAI‑MDS process.

- Physical requirements:
Lifting up to 35 pounds for 8–12 hours intermittently, moderate carrying 15–35 pounds, overhead lifting >35 pounds with assistive devices per policy, reaching above shoulders, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, visual and hearing standards.
- Execute MDS Registered Nurse (RN) responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and management of complex patient care.
- Collaborate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Demonstrate performance and leadership that improves care across all areas within assignments.
- Provide peers with constructive feedback for improvement.
- Support colleagues and other nurses through knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care.
- Foster a safe and supportive environment conducive to professional development of health care professionals.
- Lead efforts with management and within Shared Governance to alleviate identified care and culture disparities between units.
- Evaluate outcomes of evidence‑based decisions and practice changes for individuals, groups, and populations.
- Document outcomes at the program or service level.
- Have experience in health promotion and prevention; management of acute and chronic illnesses; palliative and hospice nursing.
- Demonstrate high level of clinical, managerial, and leadership skills; knowledge of VA policies, procedures, and evidence‑based practice in Long Term Care.
- Know current LTC standards of The Joint Commission, CMS, and their application to the RAI‑MDS process.
- Work Schedule:
0600–1630, no weekends, occasional holidays. May be required to work other shifts, be on call, or work weekends/holidays as needs arise. Willing to work in other units if operational needs dictate. - Location:
