Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Instructor (Night Classes HiSET/GED Preparation)

North County Adult Education & Literacy is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and student-centered AEL instructor to provide evening instruction to adult learners preparing for the HiSET/GED at the Farmington Treatment Center. Classes are typically held Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 5:40 pm to 8:40 pm, with opportunities to teach one to three evenings per week based on instructor availability and program needs.

This position is ideal for educators who are passionate about helping adults achieve their educational goals and believe in the power of second chances. Instructors will work in a structured correctional setting, supporting students as they build academic skills, confidence, and a pathway toward successful reentry into the community. The ideal candidate is flexible, professional, and committed to creating a positive, respectful learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Adult Education & Literacy instructors work collaboratively as part of a teaching team to deliver instruction in five core subject areas:

• Language/Writing
• Reading
• Math
• Science
• Social Studies

Instruction is guided by student assessment results and individualized learning plans. AEL instructors prepare adult learners to successfully pass the HiSET/GED exam and earn their High School Equivalency diploma.

Instructors use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs, promote student engagement, and support measurable student success. Teaching responsibilities include both individualized instruction and small group lessons.

• Work collaboratively as a member of a teaching team
• Maintain a student-centered, professional learning environment
• Complete 20 hours of professional development annually
• Attend required certification trainings within 60 days of hire:
• Pre-Certification Workshop (PCW)
• Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP)
• Maintain a minimum of 100 instructional hours per year to retain AEL certification
• Participate in a two-year mentorship program

• Bachelor's degree in any field
• Willingness to obtain Adult Education Certification (2-day training provided by NCSD AEL)

All AEL instructors report to the Adult Education & Literacy Director.
