Title: Elementary Counselor
Reports To: Building Principal
Work Year: 187 Days
Pay Period: Direct Deposit on the last day of the month

SUMMARY: The primary duty of a school counselor is to ensure that students have access to the resources necessary for academic and social development. School counselors work with teachers and parents to make sure that students have the proper tools and guidance to effectively learn within their skill sets. They also ensure that curricula and programs address the developmental and educational needs of students.

As appropriate, school counselors communicate with families regarding student needs and align support with outside agencies.

Education and Related Work Experience
  • Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited university
  • Teaching credential/certificate/license for corresponding age/grade level issued by the BOEE
Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students.
  • Experience developing and implementing counseling services.
  • Physical ability to handle frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and moving throughout the room.
  • Proven ability to maintain a safe and supportive school environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement age‑appropriate curriculum.
  • Ability to collaborate within the school and instructional setting.
  • Demonstrated desire to be a lifelong learner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Instruction: Teach the school counseling curriculum to students focused through the lens of selected student standards from the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.
  • Appraisal and Advisement: Assess students' abilities, interests, and achievements to help them make decisions about their future.
  • Counseling: Provide professional assistance and support to a student or small group during times of transition, heightened stress, or other situations impeding student success. Not therapy or long‑term counseling.
  • Consultation: Share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators, and community organizations.
  • Collaboration: Work with other educators, parents, and the community to support student achievement.
  • Referrals: Support students and families with referrals to school or community resources for additional assistance and information.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and handling items up to 50 pounds. Adequate visual and auditory acuity is necessary to communicate and read.

Work Environment

Work occurs in a typical school setting with modest noise levels; some exposure to environmental factors may occur.
