Assist students with basic classroom work, including computers, language arts, math, and research. Support the classroom teacher with preparing classroom work as needed and provide support to students in general and special education classrooms.
Responsibilities- Provide support to special education students in regular and special education classrooms, including adapting work, monitoring behavior, implementing health care plans, and assisting with toileting and academic support.
- Assist students in the cafeteria, transportation, and crisis situations, including restraining and documenting aggressive behaviors.
- Implement specialized therapy programs and support students in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy as needed.
- Assist teachers with grading, attendance, instructional materials, laminating, copying, filing, and preparing classroom materials.
- Mentor, support, and assist students with a variety of abilities and disabilities to become competent, independent adults.
- Supervise and monitor students during playground, lunchroom, field trips, passing periods, and classroom activities, keeping eloping students within 3–5 feet to ensure safety.
- Assist injured or sick students to the health room and cover classroom for short periods when the teacher is called out of the classroom.
- Assist with assessment testing and monitoring of student performance and perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No experience required; experience preferred working with children.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and proficiency in English.
- Interpersonal relations skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Computer skills, including keyboarding and word processing.
- Customer service and public relations skills.
- Critical thinking, problem‑solving, organizational, and multi‑tasking skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and diffuse stressful situations.
- Knowledge of Iowa state laws and school district policies.
Stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel. Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Talk, hear, taste, and smell. Up to 50 pounds. Environmental conditions include wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, work with explosives, risk of radiation, vibration.
