Biological Field Technician
Western Eco Systems Technology, Inc. (WEST) seeks a temporary full‑time Biological Field Technician to investigate the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at a wind facility near Boone, Iowa, from late July to 18 October 2026.
Benefits & Compensation- Compensation: $19–$21 per hour, DOE
- Completion Bonus: up to $500 upon completion of the project in good standing
- Housing: local candidates may receive housing or rent reimbursement
- Start Date: Admin start July 20 2026, field start July 30 2026
- End Date: October 18 2026
- Location: Green & Boone Counties, IA
Conduct standardized searches beneath wind turbines to locate and document bird and bat fatalities. Full‑time temporary employees will work 30–40 hours per week with occasional variance.
Responsibilities- Follow field and data collection protocols.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and coordinators.
- Live and work in a rural setting.
- Possess knowledge of Midwest bird and bat species (training provided).
- Conduct surveys independently within a larger team.
- Travel between sites; mileage reimbursed or 4x4 rental provided.
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Biology, or related field preferred; undergraduates encouraged to apply.
- Experience with regional wind projects preferred.
- Proficiency with macro‑photography, tablet data collection, GPS, compass, and other field equipment.
- Experience using field guides for identification, especially for the Central Flyway.
- Organized with ability to manage electronic data and quality control.
- Professional and respectful interaction with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners.
- Punctuality; start times may be early sunrise.
- Off‑road driver training provided.
- Valid driver’s license required; must pass background, drug screening, and DMV check.
- Good physical condition; daily walks of 7–10 miles in challenging conditions.
- Ability to safely open/close gates weighing 40+ pounds.
- Provide own safety‑toed footwear, binoculars, clothing, water bottle, etc.
