Minimum Qualifications:
- MA in Japanese or a closely related field (in hand by time of appointment);
Doctorate in relevant field required for appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor - Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English
- Experience teaching Japanese at the college level
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required):
- Commitment to supporting the Japanese program in co-curricular activities
- Specialization in lower- and intermediate-level language instruction
- Experience with hybrid or online instructional delivery
- Interest in developing and teaching culture-based courses
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is home to a diverse faculty, and offers a variety of courses in language, culture, literature, and linguistics. These courses support General Education as well as the department’s programs, which include majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and initial licensure programs for K-12 French and Spanish teachers.
The department also offers minors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and TESL /Applied Linguistics, two years of instruction in Latin, and graduate programs in French and Spanish K-12 and College Teaching.
The department collaborates with the Honors College, the International Business program, the Reich College of Education, and the interdisciplinary Global Studies program within the College of Arts and Sciences. The department also works closely with Appalachian’s Office of International Education and Development, offering short-term faculty-led programs abroad and a large number of semester- and year-long exchange programs.
The department and the College of Arts and Sciences are committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of all faculty, including at the rank of Lecturer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Teach undergraduate Japanese courses, primarily at the beginning and intermediate levels (4-4 course load: eight courses per academic year) face-to-face on campus in Boone
- Actively support the Japanese program through co-curricular activities (e.g., language tables, cultural workshops)
- Contribute to departmental service and engage with the broader campus academic community

Suggested Salary Range:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor.
The candidate’s salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
