Position Summary:

The Appalachian State University Libraries are looking for an experienced research data librarian and institutional repository manager to support the university’s growing research and creative activities. The role involves providing expert guidance in research data management, stewardship of the Institutional Repository (OpenAIR), and ensuring the discoverability and impact of the university’s scholarly output.

• Provide consultations, group instruction, and workshops for faculty, staff, and students on research data management, data ethics, and open science practices.
• Manage and develop Appalachian State University’s Institutional Repository to support collection, preservation, discovery, and dissemination of scholarly, creative, and research output.
• Serve as campus expert in research data discovery, management, sharing, and reuse.
• Collaborate with the Head of Scholarly Communications, liaison librarians, and other library divisions to identify repository content and conduct outreach to faculty, researchers, and rights holders.
• Assist researchers in locating and accessing relevant datasets through library resources, disciplinary repositories, data clearinghouses, and open data sources.
• Guide researchers in selecting appropriate repositories for data storage and sharing, including the institutional repository and external options.
• Maintain and enhance metadata for repository collections, ensuring consistency, quality, discoverability, and alignment with emerging standards.
• Support researcher identity management and visibility related to authorship, affiliations, ORCID iDs, DOIs, and citations.

• Master’s degree in library science from an accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, evidenced by teaching experience, instructional training, or facilitation of learning activities.
• Evidence of ability for research or other germane creative activity.

• Experience or interest in providing research consultations, workshops, and instruction sessions to faculty, students, and researchers in an academic setting.
• Knowledge of institutional repositories, digital repositories, research data management, metadata, scholarly communication, and research impact metrics.
• Familiarity with copyright, licensing, publishing of intellectual work, repository metadata standards, scripting, and data manipulation tools.
• Understanding of funder requirements for data sharing (e.g., NSF, NIH).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; flexibility in a dynamic environment; willingness to contribute to institutional mission.
