Overview
The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Integrative Biology, as part of a cluster hire to begin in Fall 2027. The position is in the Department of Biology, Boone, North Carolina.
ResponsibilitiesTeaching responsibilities will include required and elective courses in the candidate’s area of expertise and participation in the introductory biology sequence for majors. The successful candidates are expected to develop a research program that is competitive for external funding and involves undergraduate and master’s students. Applicants must be able to teach face-to-face and online with large lecture formats and small discussion sections, and to teach in laboratory settings with individual students and small groups.
Faculty are expected to mentor students, advise them on academic progress, and participate in department, college, and university service activities. Meetings with students and colleagues may occur in person or online, in small or large group formats.
Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in Biology or related field with postdoctoral experience.
Areas Of InterestThe department seeks applicants who take an integrative approach to interactions between organisms and changing environments in the following areas. We invite applications for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2027:
- Research that employs integrative techniques to address evolutionary or ecological questions related to host–pathogen/symbiont interactions, disease ecology, quantifying the impact of climate change on species interactions, or quantifying differing responses to change across organismal lineages.
- One applicant addresses one or more of these questions in plants and one in animals, with preferences for candidates who complement current departmental strengths.
Teaching responsibilities could include Evolution, Ecology, Global Change Ecology, Plant Physiology, and rotation into the first-year biology sequence. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop integrative courses in their area of specialty.
Department and FacilitiesThe Department of Biology supports a 44-faculty community with a 6-person technical staff and 3 administrators, serving approximately 950 Biology majors and 70 graduate students. Facilities support cutting-edge molecular techniques, including flow cytometry, gel imaging, cell culture, and Illumina sequencing. The Rankin Science Building houses the William and Ruth Dewel Microscopy Facility with equipment for epifluorescence, confocal, SEM, and TEM, along with sample preparation capabilities.
The department and university offer a comprehensive Faculty Mentoring Program and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Student Success, which provide mentoring and pedagogical support.
Teach a mix of courses and participate in the Introductory Biology sequence for majors. Develop and pursue an externally funded research program involving undergraduate and master’s students. Engage in advising and regular meetings with students and colleagues regarding academic progress and departmental operations.
