PhD in Biology or related field and postdoctoral training.

Department Overview

The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University comprises 44 faculty and 6 technicians, serving approximately 950 biology majors and 70 graduate students. The department offers instruction through classrooms, labs, and research experiences, with faculty teaching an average of three courses per semester. Facilities include the William and Ruth Dewel Microscopy Facility
, a shared research space with flow cytometry, cell culture, and Illumina sequencing, and greenhouses, nature preserves, and field sites. New faculty receive mentoring through the Faculty Mentoring Program and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Student Success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach a sophomore‑level Cell Biology course and develop an advanced course in the applicant’s specialty.
  • Provide periodic participation in the first‑year biology sequence.
  • Develop and maintain a competitive external‑funding research program focused on fundamental cellular and molecular biology.
  • Conduct undergraduate and graduate research supervision.
  • Serve on departmental and university service committees, including undergraduate advising, curriculum development, and assessment.
