Position Summary:

The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University seeks an Assistant Professor of Coastal Processes. The candidate will develop and teach new upper‑level courses on Coastal Processes and Physical Oceanography for majors to complement the current curriculum.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Geology/Earth Science, Oceanography, Geoscience, or a closely related field at the time of appointment, and possess a strong commitment to undergraduate education and mentoring undergraduate research.

Outstanding research in Coastal Processes and a demonstrated track record of securing external funding are highly desirable.

• Develop and deliver upper‑level courses on Coastal Processes and Physical Oceanography.
• Support existing courses such as GES 3333 Geomorphology, GES 2750/2751/2752 research/field‑methods, or GES 1105 introductory lecture/lab, as appropriate.
• Mentor undergraduate research projects.
• Establish and maintain an externally funded research program focused on Coastal Processes.
• Engage in departmental and university service activities as required.

ABD candidates will be considered only if defense is completed and documentation received by the specified deadlines; otherwise candidates will receive a one‑year fixed‑term contract at the rank of Instructor with a reduced salary. Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree will be considered for permanent appointment.
