Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Sustainable Technology & the Built Environment (STBE) houses three academic programs: the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Renewable Energy Technology; the BS in Building Sciences, with twoconcentrations; and the Master of Science in Technology. The Department includes more than
35 full-time faculty serving approximately 950 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. STBE has played an integral role in building the University'ssustainability agenda, which features prominently in the University's Strategic Plan. WithinSTBE, faculty exemplify a commitment to applied research and interdisciplinary,experiential learning. Students in these programs have achieved notablesuccesses in national and international competitions such as the Formula Sun Grand Prixand American Solar Challenge, the USDOE Race to Zero and Solar Decathlon, Solar Decathlon Europe, and the US EPA P3 program, among others.

The Building Sciences Program is structured to establish a broadset of foundational skills and knowledge related to the whole life cycleof the built environment, including design, construction, and operations. This foundation acts as a catalyst for growth and success in our graduates' careers.

Extending beyond foundational principles, the program is committed to primingstudents' minds to deconstruct, organize, and solve a wide range of problems relatedto the built environment in a team-based setting. Students go on to career pathsin architecture, construction, building performance assessment, and facilities management.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts (CFAA) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic, transdisciplinary academic unit that emphasizesexperiential learning and offers 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments:
Applied Design;

Communication;
Military Science and Leadership;

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the position is teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Building Sciences program, which may include but arenot limited to:

Other responsibilities include maintaining an active scholarly agenda, team-based coordination of a four-course studio sequenceor building sciences integrated courses, advising students,collaborating with professionals in the building industry, and participating in service work.
