Admissions and Pre-certification Specialist
Location: Boone, North Carolina | Full-Time | 8:00am - 5:00pm (Monday - Friday)

As an Admissions and Pre-certification Specialist at UNC Health Appalachian, you'll help ensure a smooth, accurate, and supportive experience for patients entering our health system. You'll play a vital role in verifying insurance coverage, securing pre-certifications, and preparing patients for admission - all while supporting exceptional customer service and timely care delivery. - Compensation: Starting pay begins at $16.80 per hour, with competitive rates based on experience and education.
- Schedule: Full-time, variable shifts; may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

- Obtain pre-certification and verify benefits for all scheduled admissions.
- Contact insurance providers to confirm coverage, network status, and patient financial responsibility.
- Complete accurate patient registration, demographic entry, and documentation for admission.
- Communicate with patients, families, clinical teams, and insurance representatives to support a seamless admission process.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, payer requirements, and confidentiality standards (HIPAA).
- Provide excellent customer service to ensure a positive patient experience.
- Support financial counseling, scheduling, and other registration functions as needed.
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 3-6 months of experience in a medical office, clinic, or acute care setting preferred.
- None required.
- Knowledge of admissions, insurance verification, and scheduling workflows.
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to navigate computer systems, faxing, scanning, and multi-line phone operations.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and compliance with payer guidelines.
- Ability to collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking for 7+ hours per day.
- Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, mechanical equipment, and hospital environment risks.
- Regular exposure to blood borne pathogens and unpleasant elements (accidents, bodily fluids, slippery surfaces).
- May work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
