Suggested Salary Range: $69,278 - $75,000

Physical Demands of Position: Ability to lift and carry educational, training materials, ladders and other equipment. Ability to provide in-class, simulated instructions to variety of campus personnel. Able to stand/sit for extended periods, drive vehicles, and occasionally work in challenging weather conditions.

Position Summary Information

Primary

Purpose:

The primary purpose of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office is to develop and manage comprehensive environmental health, safety, and emergency management programs for the University. The primary role of the Environmental Affairs Manager is to administer the University's environmental safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance and protect human health and the environment. This position manages the hazardous and universal waste programs and provides applicable training—all of which are required by regulatory standards.

The position also supports research operations related to biohazards, controlled substances, and dangerous goods. The Environmental Affairs Manager works with individuals across all areas of the University to ensure safe working and learning environments. Students and faculty are attracted to App State because of its safe, environmentally conscious reputation. The role helps reduce significant financial costs associated with waste management through implementation of waste minimization and pollution prevention strategies, and by appropriately managing hazardous materials in research and teaching laboratories to reduce risks of exposures and injuries.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety, biological or physical science, or related discipline.
  • Three to five years of experience in environmental safety with knowledge of research laboratory operations, hazardous materials management, and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Hazardous Materials Technician, or other certification related to environmental safety preferred.
License/Certification Required

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Hazardous Materials Technician, or related professional certification.
