Position Overview
Occupational Safety Manager role within the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office. Primary purpose: develop and manage comprehensive environmental health, safety, and emergency management programs for the University. The manager provides comprehensive workplace safety programs and oversight, including building inspections, job hazard analyses, accident investigations, safety training, policy development, record maintenance, liaison with safety committees and external agencies. Also supervises Safety Coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, industrial engineering, biological or physical science, or related discipline.
- At least 3 to 5 years of related experience.
- CSP or related certification.
- 3-5 years of experience as a safety professional, conducting building inspections and accident investigations, providing safety training, developing policies and programs, and performing additional duties related to occupational health and safety.
- 1-3 years of supervisory experience.
- Develop and manage an effective occupational safety program under the general guidance of the Assistant Director.
- Develop new policies and programs to address emerging trends, best practices, or to ensure compliance.
- Provide training using a variety of platforms to include in-person and online.
- Evaluate effectiveness of training programs.
- Remain current on industry trends and make appropriate changes to program areas of responsibility.
- Coordinate with other industry professionals, consultants, and vendors to provide appropriate occupational safety services on campus.
- Conduct building inspections, job hazard analyses, and accident investigations.
- Recommend and implement appropriate procedures to address safety concerns.
- Provide technical information and expertise to university constituents on occupational safety.
- Consult on safety matters related to facilities planning and construction projects.
- Review and update safety policies and programs in relation to occupational standards and regulations.
- Provide training and educational resources on occupational health and safety.
- Understand and effectively communicate hazard analyses, reports, and other investigative findings.
- Communicate corrective actions effectively to various entities and individuals across campus.
- Formulate written and verbal reports to communicate findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
- Serve a leading role on the University Health and Safety Committee.
- Work closely with the University's Leave Management Administrator to develop strategies for preventing accidents and reducing workers’ compensation claims.
- Serve as liaison with external occupational safety agencies.
- Develop appropriate reports for a wide range of internal and external audiences.
- Provide guidance and effective supervision to employees reporting to this position.
