Assistant Controller, Fund Accounting | Real Estate Investment Manager | Hybrid Boston
A leading real estate investment manager with a diversified portfolio across multifamily, industrial, and commercial real estate is seeking an Assistant Controller – Fund Accounting to join its growing finance team.
This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for overseeing fund-level financial reporting, consolidations, investor reporting, and complex accounting matters across multiple real estate investment vehicles. The Assistant Controller will partner closely with Property Accounting, Asset Management, Acquisitions, Capital Markets, Treasury, and external auditors while mentoring a team and helping drive operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee quarterly and annual financial reporting for assigned real estate investment vehicles and related holding companies
- Review fund-level consolidations, financial statements, eliminations, and reporting packages
- Maintain a strong understanding of complex fund structures, joint ventures, ownership arrangements, and partnership agreements
- Review capital calls, distributions, waterfall calculations, and investor reporting
- Partner with acquisitions, capital markets, and asset management teams on property acquisitions, dispositions, and financings
- Review transaction accounting, debt activity, and general ledger entries for complex real estate transactions
- Coordinate annual audits, prepare financial statement disclosures, and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors
- Oversee fund cash planning, performance reporting, and institutional investor requests
- Supervise and mentor fund accounting staff while driving process improvements and strengthening internal controls
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5–10+ years of accounting experience with a strong background in real estate fund accounting, financial reporting, or investment accounting
- Experience with fund consolidations, joint venture accounting, partnership structures, and GAAP financial reporting
- Strong understanding of capital activity, waterfalls, investor reporting, and complex ownership structures
- Experience supporting external audits and preparing fund financial statements
- Prior experience with Yardi, Workiva, or similar real estate accounting platforms is a plus
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
