The Director of Revenue Accounting is a senior finance leader responsible for the strategic direction, operational excellence, and audit-ready execution of the revenue accounting function. This role owns accurate and timely revenue reporting, commissions accounting, monthly and quarterly close deliverables, revenue-related technical accounting conclusions, and compliance with ASC 606 and ASC 340 in a public Software/SaaS company environment. The Director will lead and develop a high-performing team while serving as a trusted advisor to Sales, Sales Operations, Deal Desk, Legal, Order/License Management, Billing, FP&A, and other cross-functional partners on contract structuring, new go-to-market offerings, systems, controls, and scalable quote-to-cash processes.
This is a hybrid role (2 days per week) out of our Boston, MA office.
Key Responsibilities- Own accurate and timely monthly and quarterly revenue accounting close activities, including revenue recognition, deferred revenue, unbilled receivables, contract assets and liabilities, commissions accounting, journal entry review, reconciliations, and revenue-related flux analysis.
- Serve as the company’s subject matter expert on ASC 606 and ASC 340 for Software/SaaS arrangements, including variable consideration, contract modifications, material right assessment, combined performance obligations, commission capitalization and significant contract reviews.
- Design, maintain, and continuously improve revenue accounting policies, procedures, systems, controls, reporting and documentation to support consistent application of GAAP, operational scalability, disclosure preparation, and public-company audit compliance.
- Partner cross-functionally across Quote-to-Cash with Sales, Sales Operations, Deal Desk, Legal, Order/License Management, Billing, FP&A, and business leadership to evaluate non-standard contracts, advise on deal structuring, and ensure revenue accounting considerations are addressed upstream.
- Evaluate revenue accounting implications of new products, pricing and packaging changes, partner/channel arrangements, strategic transactions, and go-to-market initiatives; prepare technical accounting memos, position papers, and related documentation as needed.
- Lead periodic reviews of revenue recognition processes, close procedures, and controls; identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, automation, and effectiveness of the revenue accounting control environment.
- Partner with Finance Systems, Sales Operations, and other stakeholders to enhance revenue accounting data integrity, system workflows, reporting, and automation across Salesforce, Net Suite, and related revenue platforms.
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of revenue accounting professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and strong cross-functional partnership.
- Manage revenue accounting analyses and whitepapers, including standalone selling price analyses, combined performance obligation assessments, variable consideration evaluations, new GTM offering assessments, and significant contract revenue checklists.
- Own revenue-related SOX controls, internal and external audit requests, audit evidence, and auditor coordination to ensure timely, well-supported, and defensible conclusions.
- Analyze revenue trends, variances, and key drivers as part of the monthly and quarterly close analytics process, providing actionable insights to Finance and business stakeholders.
- Monitor updates to accounting standards, SEC developments, and industry practices related to revenue recognition and assess the impact on the company’s policies, processes, and disclosures.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting and/or public company revenue accounting leadership experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA required.
- Deep expertise in ASC 606 and ASC 340, with demonstrated experience applying revenue recognition guidance in a Software/SaaS environment.
