Client Overview

Our client is a well-established Boston-based real estate investment and property management organization. Our client is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant (Real Estate) to take ownership of the accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of real estate properties.

Salary/Hourly Rate

$70k - $80k

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant (Real Estate) will manage a broad range of accounting responsibilities, including accounts payable, cash receipts, journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, month-end close and reporting, variance analysis, budgeting, and preparation of tax work papers. The assigned portfolio consists primarily of residential apartment buildings, along with commercial properties, mixed-use and office properties, and hotels throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

This position is ideal for an accountant with strong GAAP knowledge who is organized, dependable, comfortable working in a high-volume environment, and interested in joining a stable organization for the long term. The hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM or 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Responsibilities Of The Staff Accountant (Real Estate)
  • Take full ownership of accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of real estate properties.
  • Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, and daily cash receipts.
  • Review, enter, and maintain invoices while obtaining appropriate approvals and ensuring timely and accurate payment.
  • Apply and process daily cash receipts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and ensure reporting deadlines are consistently met.
  • Perform month-end variance analysis by comparing actual results against budget and investigating discrepancies.
  • Prepare annual property budgets and assist with forecasting activities.
  • Prepare tax work papers and support trial balance preparation for outside CPA firms.
  • Monitor rental rates, market rates, and tenant rent increases.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable GAAP accounting standards and tax regulations.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records across multiple properties and entities.
  • Communicate professionally with internal employees, bankers, vendors, and outside accounting partners.
  • Support the Controller and broader Accounting team with special projects and additional accounting initiatives as needed.
Required Experience/Skills For The Staff Accountant (Real Estate)
  • 3+ years of hands-on GAAP accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with general ledger accounting and account reconciliations.
  • Experience preparing and posting journal entries.
  • Hands-on accounts payable and accounts receivable experience.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and supporting month-end close.
  • Experience performing budget-to-actual and other variance analysis.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Hands-on experience using accounting software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple properties, accounts, deadlines, and competing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Dependable and able to work effectively both independently and as part of an accounting team.
  • Ability and desire to work onsite in Boston Monday through Friday.
Preferred Experience /Skills For The Staff Accountant (Real Estate)
  • 5+ years of GAAP accounting experience is strongly preferred.
  • Property accounting or real estate accounting experience.
  • Experience managing accounting responsibilities for multiple properties or entities.
  • Hotel or hospitality accounting experience.
  • Payroll experience.
  • Experience preparing annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Experience preparing tax work papers.
  • Experience working with outside CPA firms.
  • Experience producing monthly financial reporting for multiple entities or properties.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
